Michael Lindner creates around 100 beautiful pipes per year, running the gamut from perfectly-executed billiards to artistic, flowing Blowfish. Starting with briar from the same source that Teddy Knudsen utilizes, Michael air-cures his wood a minimum of three years before working it. This ensures an effortless break-in, and in our personal experience Lindner Pipes tend to be very forgiving in their smoking characteristics. German ebonite and brindle rod stock is used to create the handcut stems, and all the pipes are completely handmade. The engineering is spot-on, and Michael says he will not make a pipe that won’t pass a pipecleaner easily. The bowl coatings are completely neutral in flavour and still allow the wood to absorb the moisture of the smoke. Whether you collect the classics, or you prefer the avant-garde, every Lindner will smoke effortlessly, day in, day out.
This particular Lindner shape is a classic Bat-stamped sandblasted double magnum Canadian with a lovely detailed mixed blast - the right, back and front show amazing rings while the left is tight blasted birdseye. This is a true double magnum, with a bowl over 3 inches tall and a length of 9 3/8 inches. The shank alone is a whopping 5+ inches long! (Yes, a solid shank, not spliced.) The rich antique shell finish with reddish highlights and the handcut brindle mouthpiece give this piece a very classic British feel. This piece is graded "D4", which is a mid-level sandblast grade, fourth price tier. The "D" grade is reserved for well-grained sandblasts – usually off-center ringblasts and radial crosscuts – that are craggy and well-defined, while the "Bat" stamp indicates that this is a Double Magnum. Be sure to take a look at all seven pictures - there is a shot with the pipe next to an apple (which is a group 4 size) for comparison, as well as great closeup shots that show the amazing detail of the blast.
Markings read: michael lindner, handmade usa, (Bat stamp), D, 4 (in a circle), 2011. Measurements: 9 3/8" long with a shank just over 5", bowl is just about 2 1/8" wide and just over 3" tall. The chamber is 1.03" across and is 2.78" deep. The weight is 135 grams. About a Dunhill magnum in capacity.
