Michael Lindner creates around 100 beautiful pipes per year, running the gamut from perfectly-executed billiards to artistic, flowing Blowfish. Starting with briar from the same source that Teddy Knudsen utilizes, Michael air-cures his wood a minimum of three years before working it. This ensures an effortless break-in, and in our personal experience Lindner Pipes tend to be very forgiving in their smoking characteristics. German ebonite and brindle rod stock is used to create the handcut stems, and all the pipes are completely handmade. The engineering is spot-on, and Michael says he will not make a pipe that won’t pass a pipecleaner easily. The bowl coatings are completely neutral in flavour and still allow the wood to absorb the moisture of the smoke. Whether you collect the classics, or you prefer the avant-garde, every Lindner will smoke effortlessly, day in, day out.
This particular Lindner is a gorgeous ringblasted C3 saddle billiard with an ivory inlay. Classic in shape, it is very similar to the Spider grade ivory billiard that was listed out a couple months back, only about one size larger. As always, the devil is in the details: The perfect cut of the saddle stem; the lovely mastadon ivory inlay; the smooth chamfered inner rim that blends into the surrounding blast. The piece has a beautifully detailed straightgrain ringblast stained in the "Antique Shell" finish; the deep, dark finish is accentuated with the rich reddish highlights. Set against the ebonite stem and creamy white ivory inlay, this piece is absolutely gorgeous. This piece is graded "C3", which is the top regular grade for sandblasted pipes, at the top pricepoint for the C grade.
Markings read: michael lindner, handmade usa, 2011, C, 2 (in a circle). Measurements: 5 5/8" long, bowl is just over 1 1/2" wide and 2 1/8" tall. The chamber is .84" across and 1.72" deep. The pipe weighs 55 grams. About a Dunhill large group 5 in capacity.
