1970s Lane-Era Charatan's Make Tanblast Cherrywood

Charatan holds a very special place in the collective pipe collecting conscience. While there have been many great pipes made in England, for many collectors, Charatan has a certain mystique about it. The "old world" craftsmanship, the rivalry with Dunhill, and the Crown Achievement, touted as the world's most valuable pipe, all contribute to the aura of Chartan's Make.

Here we have a Lane-Era Charatan's Make tan sandblasted cherrywood poker in good condition.  Overall the pipe is pretty decent with fully readable stampings in the wood (the stem stampings are light), nice mixed grain, original stem with no toothmarks, and some darkening on the rim from smoking.  The pipe has a medium-large chamber, good wall thickness and a nice clean chamber.  It's been fully restored and is ready to pack and light.

Markings read: (Lane "L"), CHARATAN’S MAKE, LONDON ENGLAND, 84 D.C. The stem has the CP, weak but readable with some oxidation around the stamping in an effort to preserve it; the registration number is long gone.  Measurements: 6" long, bowl is just about 1 1/2" wide and 1 7/8" tall. The pipe weighs 46 grams. This one is about a Dunhill large group 5 in capacity.

Condition:

9 out of 10. Overall very good condition with fully readable, deep stampings, a nice blast, clean chamber, and no toothmarks on the original stem.  Issues:  Some moderate darkening on the rim, especially around the back edge.  There is some slight rounding all the way around the inner rim edge.  The nomenclature - while all there, deep, and fully readable - is no longer factory crisp.  They are plenty deep though.  The stem stampings are weak (CP), or gone (Registration number).  The stem was heavily oxidized and there is still a touch of oxidation around the CP, as well as in the crevices of the Double Comfort cuts on the stem.  All cleaned up and ready to pack and light.
