Product Description

A Peterson Product:  Killarney Smooth Red Apple

Description, Markings, Measurements:

Peterson is an interesting brand. While many pipe collectors have any number of brands in their racks, there are a whole lot of smokers who are die-hard Peterson fans. By this, I don't mean they have a couple Petersons; I mean they smoke Petersons, and that's that. Not interested in changing, not interested in the latest and greatest, take your Dunhill and....well, you get the point.

The Killarney is a "seconds" line from Peterson, insomuch as they lack the Peterson name but rather are marked as "A Peterson Product", but they've always offered a good value for the money.  Usually sporting fills (this one no exception), they offer the smoker a product of decent quality for not a lot of money.  This goes doubly so on the estate market.  With a retail of $130, you can usually find Killarneys as estates in the $70 range when in excellent condition.  This one has a few conditional issues, but they're all cosmetic.  So here, in this condition, it's a bit of a bargain pipe.  It'll be a great pipe to go fishing with, or do some yard work.

Markings are light overall and read: Killarney (in script), A PETERSON PRODUCT, MADE IN THE REP OF IRELAND, 408.  .  The stem has an impressed "P", faded from buffing but still visible.

Length: 5.85"
Bowl width: 1.74"
Bowl Height: 1.69"
Chamber dimensions: .82" across, 1.38" deep
Weight: 51 grams

7.5 out of 10.  Nomenclature is weak but readable; this has as much to do with the depth of stamping as it does with buffing, as for the most part the stamping has clean edges but just is very shallow.  Stem has one shallow toothmark on the bottom underside of the "P" lip, but nothing on the main area you'd clench.  The main issue is the vast number of dings on the rim, and the handling marks and light scratches on the bowl; none are deep, but there are quite a few of them.  There is a small scratch on the bottom of the shank, and the silver-toned band has a thin crack through it (please note this is the band that is cracked, NOT THE SHANK).  All cleaned up and ready to go.
