Product Description

Hallmarked Peterson Silvermount Donegal Rocky (Can't Make Out Date Code, 1971?)

Description, Markings, Measurements:

Peterson is an interesting brand. While many pipe collectors have any number of brands in their racks, there are a whole lot of smokers who are die-hard Peterson fans. By this, I don't mean they have a couple Petersons; I mean they smoke Petersons, and that's that. Not interested in changing, not interested in the latest and greatest, take your Dunhill and....well, you get the point.

Here we have an older Donegal Rocky, and I'm just giving you a heads up, this pipe is a smoker, not a showpiece.  I mean... it is a solid pipe, with no serious toothmarks on the original stem, but the nomenclature is nearly buffed away, the rustication has been smoothed by years of handling, the silverwork is worn... it's a nice solid pipe, but Donegal Rockys were never expensive to begin with.  So here, in this condition, it's a bit of a bargain pipe.  It'll be a great pipe to go fishing with, or do some yard work.

Markings are VERY worn and read: Peterson's DONEGAL ROCKY, 86, MADE IN THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND.  Silver is marked:  K&P, STERLING SILVER, and the hallmarks, which include a date code for what I believe is 1971 (also worn and hard to read without magnification).  The stem has an impressed "P", faded from buffing but still visible.

Length: 5.81"
Bowl width: 1.46"
Bowl Height: 1.58"
Chamber dimensions: .76" across, 1.31" deep
Weight: 33 grams

7.75 out of 10.  The biggest issue is the stamping.  Nomenclature is nearly gone, but you can read most of it in strong light and with magnification.  Silver marks are worn as well, but I think the date code indicates 1971.  Rim is darkened from smoking, and the rest of the finish is softened from handling, which shows quite a bit of reddish highlights now - in fact, most of the pipe has lightened overall to a reddish brown, rather than a dark inky black.  The stem has some very small, tiny tooth 'waves' - not real impressions, but just a couple spots where light reflects around small tiny dips.  These are minor.  All cleaned up and ready to go.
