Product Description

1950s Kaywoodie White Briar 45C Dublin

Description, Markings, Measurements:

The SM Frank Company has been making pipes since in the good-old U.S.A. since 1851. Kaywoodies have always been quality, affordable pipes, and many of our fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers considered his Kaywoodie a trusted old friend.  In fact, in the early years of Kaywoodie, these pipes were considered every bit a top-grade pipe, comparable to the best from England.  In 1929, Kaywoodie introduced the "Synchro-Stem" system we all know today, where instead of the drinkless attachment being at the end of a push-tenon, it was now integrated into the way the stem and shank fit together.  Which brings us to this piece.

This particular Kaywoodie is a "White Briar", which if I remember was available from the late 1940s through the 1950s.  These were briar pipes that had a solid enamel coating resistant to most staining, dents, dings and other abuse pipes might endure.  They mimicked the look of clean white meerschaum without the need for special handling; on the downside, they didn't darken and color like meers did.  This particular example is a classic dublin, shape 45C; the stinger is intact and outside some darkening on the rim (from tar/smoking) and a few knock marks and wear to the outer rim edge, the pipe is in excellent condition.

Markings read: KAYWOODIE, WHITE BRIAR, IMPORTED BRIAR, 45C.  The stem has an inlaid white clover.

Measurements:

Length: 5.96"
Bowl width: 1.35"
Bowl Height: 1.84"
Chamber dimensions: .81" across, 1.60" deep
Weight: 28 grams

Condition:

9.5 out of 10.  Issues:  Some slight but even darkening all over most of the rim.  The outer rim edge has a few areas with some dings and wear to the finish; this is most noticeable at the 4 o'clock position but there are small spots at the 6 o'clock, 9 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions.  The stem has no toothmarks and a thick button, with an intact stinger and no issues.  Nomenclature is as new.  All cleaned up and ready to go.
