Product Description

Estimated 1970s Canberra, Made By British Empire Pipe Company, Unsmoked

Description, Markings, Measurements:

John Redman and the British Empire Pipe Company has a long history dating back to 1934, where the first factory was actually located in Malta (which, at the time, was part of the British empire).  At some point - likely shortly before the war came to Malta - a factory was established in East London, where it remained until the late 1990s or early 2000s.  The company was responsible for a large number of brands, from Aristocrat to Dr John to Buckingham Palace, a probably a good dozen other brands which were staples of the hundreds of pipe shops throughout England for decades.

Among the many brands produced was a line of pipes called "Canberra" (likely named for the capital city in Australia).  This particular pipe is an unsmoked smooth radial crosscut Canberra Dublin with a rusticated rim and fancy 'Danish style' flared saddle stem.  The bowl is pre-carbonized, and the stem was rather oxidized when we got the piece (probably due to the lower quality vulcanite used in the pre-formed stem.)  This was a working man's pipe, not a Dunhill, and as such it has some small fills, a few sandspots here and there, and overall is not something I would call a "collector's piece".  That said, it's a solid, well-made pipe with a bit of character from one of the larger budget-priced factories to turn out pipes since before the war.  It's a neat piece, and probably will make a pretty solid smoker.

Markings read: CANBERRA (over) LONDON MADE. Stampings are mainly deep with some lighter impressions on a few of the center letters (for example the NBER in CANBERRA are lighter than the rest).  I don't know if that was the way it came, or was due to an overzealous shop attendant who buffed it a bit too aggressively.  Regardless, all the letters are fully readable and mostly deep.

Length: 6.11"
Bowl width: 1.31"
Bowl Height: 1.83"
Chamber dimensions: .80" across, 1.53" deep
Weight: 32 grams

9.75 out of 10. A couple light handling marks here and there, and the aforementioned lighter stamping on a few letters are the only detractions.  Not a lot of money for a nifty little piece of British Empire Pipe Company history.
