Product Description

Dirk Claessen Ringblasted Brandy/Billiard w/Wood Inlay

Description, Markings, Measurements:

Dirk Claessen, a Belgian by birth (born in 1962), now lives and makes pipes in the idyllic Costa Blanca region of Spain. As with most pipe makers, he started smoking a pipe (in 2008) and shortly thereafter decided to start making his own.  His first pipes were drilled by Peter Heding back in 2009, but starting in 2010 he acquired a lathe and all the other necessary equipment and has been making pipes start to finish since then.  Having spent time with Love and Sarah Geiger, he has honed his skills and really made an impression in the pipe world.  He draws influences from a number of makers (anywhere from Cornelius Maenz to Brad Pohlman) and insists on quality materials, using only Mimmo briar and German ebonite.  His production is very low - under 100 a year - and he strives for perfection in every pipe he makes.

This particular Claessen is a 2013 ringblasted Brandy/Billiard with an unknown wood shank cap (it looks like Tiger Oak, although I cannot tell for certain).  The workmanship is impressive; from the detail work on the button and slot to the dead-center airway and detailed blasting, this pipe is of exceptional quality.  The pipe is stained in a rich dark brown with lighter orange highlights peeking through, which highlights the lovely ringblast and the perfectly centered birdseye heel.  The rim is smooth and slightly rounded, and the handcut stem insets slightly into the shank cap.  The pipe is practically new, having had just half a bowl run through it.  It is in perfect condition with no issues whatsoever.
