Product Description

Recent Production Comoy's Billiard

Description, Markings, Measurements:

Starting in France in 1825 and utilizing various local hardwoods for their pipes, Comoy started producing "modern" briar pipes by 1848. By 1879, Henri Comoy (the grandson of the founder, Francois Comoy) had moved his company to London, as this had become the largest market for Comoy pipes. A full 40 years before Dunhill made their own pipes in-house; Comoy had already established itself as one of London's premier pipe companies.

This piece is a modern production (probably 1990s) large billiard in excellent overall condition.  Although modern Comoys are not "collectible" in the same sense as the pre-1980s pieces are (Tradition, London Pride, etc), they are still solid pipes, made by Cadogen (the same company that has been making Comoys for decades), with attractive briar.  This one is a bit on the larger side; it's about the size of a modern group 5 Dunhill.  The graining is a back-to-front radial crosscut with  horizontal flame left and right, and a sea of birdseye on the front of the bowl.  Yes, there is a small fill or two, as well as some sandpits, but this is no worse than you'd find on a $200 Peterson.  All in all this is a very nice pipe for the money and while it won't fill a hole in your Comoy collection, it just may end up being a great smoking pipe in your rotation.

Markings are deep: COMOY'S, P, MADE IN LONDON (in a circle, over) ENGLAND, 510.

Length: 5.88"
Bowl width: 1.53"
Bowl Height: 1.95"

9.75 out of 10. Issues: Some moderate darkening on the deep inner rim chamfer; A shallow toothmark on the top of the button; a few light handling marks (nothing serious) and the impressed "C" on the stem is a touch weak.  Otherwise all cleaned up and ready to pack and light.
