Product Description

1985 Comoy Christmas Pipe; A Lovely Bent Banker, Unsmoked

Description, Markings, Measurements:

Starting in France in 1825 and utilizing various local hardwoods for their pipes, Comoy started producing "modern" briar pipes by 1848. By 1879, Henri Comoy (the grandson of the founder, Francois Comoy) had moved his company to London, as this had become the largest market for Comoy pipes. A full 40 years before Dunhill made their own pipes in-house; Comoy had already established itself as one of London's premier pipe companies.

According to Richard Hacker, Comoy has the distinction of being the first major company to introduce the annual tradition of the Christmas Pipe to the US market, having released their first one in 1970.  Production never exceeded 1800 examples each year, with about a quarter of that slated for the US market.  This particular example dates from 1985, and is unsmoked.  The shape is a classic bent banker, which is a brandy-shaped bowl with an oval shank and saddle stem.  The graining is a mised-grain crosscut, and there does not appear to be any fills on the pipe (although a few sandspots are present).  This particular example, as noted, is unsmoked, and outside a couple teeny tiny handling marks scattered here and there, is in mint condition.

Markings read: COMOY'S (over) CHRISTMAS, 1985, MADE IN LONDON (in a circle, over) ENGLAND, H, 16. The stem does NOT have a C logo, but IS original and is stamped HAND CUT on the right side.

Length: 5.20"
Bowl width: 1.62"
Bowl Height: 1.55"
Chamber dimensions: .75" across, 1.30" deep
Weight: 41 grams

9.75 out of 10.  Unsmoked and ready to pack and light.  Issues are minor:  A couple areas with a smattering of light handling marks, but nothing serious at all.  I do not have the original box or sleeve, but the pipe will come with a generic sleeve.
