Product Description

2008 Premal Chheda Bent Pear/Acorn Tanblast in Near-Mint Condition

Description, Markings, Measurements:

Premal Chheda - probably best known for being the proprietor of the venerable Smoker's Haven in Columbus, Ohio - started dabbling in pipe making around late 2002 or early 2003, and worked on his own for a number of years to refine his craft.  At some point in 2007, Premal brought in a young unknown pipe enthusiast and recent CCAD grad named Bill Shalosky.  What Bill lacked in pipe experience, he more than made up for in raw artistic talent and enthusiasm, and an interesting partnership was formed.  I say "partnership" because I think - especially in the first couple of years - that the teacher and the student roles switched back and forth as both learned from each other.  This is no knock on either Premal or Bill; rather I think it speaks volumes to their ability to work and learn from each other, grow in their craft and develop both as individuals and as the team that they eventually became.  Sometime around 2012, Bill decided to go off on his own, and since then Premal has worked with other pipe makers to help with the production of the Chheda line, embracing that same philosophy of shared knowledge and ideas to produce unique pieces.  Today, Premal works on his own, and as many who are also running other businesses, his time is limited in the quantity of pipes he can produce.

This Chheda is a beautiful little bent Pear/Acorn that dates from 2008, and I remember when I first saw this pipe.  The Piperack was one of the first US dealers for Chheda pipes in the USA outside of Smoker's Haven, and I picked this pieces up (along with two or three others and two Shaloskys) at (I believe) the Newark show in March of 2008.  I know for a fact that this pipe was made by Premal entirely; at the time, Premal was still insisting on doing most everything to his own pipes as he worked with Bill on the basics of lathe work, and I know that for a while at the beginning, Bill was doing restorations for Premal and making only his own pipes, not working on Chhedas (outside of the finishing processes).  As Bill and Premal gradually started to work together, there was a melding of the design philosophy (at least to my eye) and a change to the way Chheda pipes looked fundamentally.  This isn't a good thing or a bad thing, it's just an observation of how things can change when two people start having some say in the design of a particular object.  I think the process helped both Bill and Premal improve, and I've enjoyed watching the process unfold for both of them.   ANYWAY, enough rambling about my personal opinions!! This is a darling little pipe, and really it isn't so little with a healthy group 4-sized chamber and comfortable bend to the stem.  The bowl is a bit of a hybrid between a classic pear shape and an Acorn (more toward Pear to me), with a flowing, gently curved shank that flares ever-so-slightly as it approaches the saddle stem.  The stem is, of course, hand-cut from German Ebonite, and I've always thought that Premal's button and slot work were top-notch.  The bit is thin and comfortable at .137" (3.46mm) and the pipe hangs effortlessly from the jaw.  At only 35 grams, this is the type of pipe you could have hanging while reading or typing or taking the dog for a quick walk and not even notice it was there.  It's very nicely balanced, light weight, attractive and well-made.  The blast is a classic birdseye-laden crosscut, and the pipe was unstained when purchased; it has darkened up into a rich golden hue over the past eight years of careful smoking.  Condition is excellent, with nary a mark or scratch anywhere.  In fact, like just about every other pipe in this lot, the only issue is a touch of darkening around the chamber opening.
