Product Description

1970s Transition-Era Barling Smooth Canadian

Description, Markings, Measurements:

Transition Barlings are often looked down upon by many of the pipe collecting community as 'not worthy' of carrying the Barling name. It's as if Satan himself had bought the company and started making the pipes out of the souls of orphans. Yet these pipes are actually quite good - in many cases, great. The briar is old stock (sometimes the bowls or the entire pipe was made before the company was sold), the workmanship is solid (it would make sense that a number of the craftsmen stayed on) and the only difference between the two being a gradual change in nomenclature, followed by a necessary need to trim costs here and there. It really wasn't until the company was sold AGAIN (this time, it WAS sold to Satan) that the company went to hell in a handbasket.

This particular pipe is an estate Transition Barling smooth shape 5574, in a classic Canadian shape.  The pipe possesses no fills that I can see, although there are a few sandspots.  The stem is, unfortunately, a replacement, but it fits well, has a thin comfortable profile and has only the smallest of pinprick toothmarks on the bottom of the button along with a very small, shallow tooth 'wave' on the top of the button (none on the actual lip of the stem itself).  Although it's impossible to tell for certain, I would hazard a guess this pipe is from the early 1970s at some point. The pipe is in very good to excellent condition overall, with very good stampings, medium capacity, reasonably thick walls, and classic proportions.  The finish is in excellent condition with only the slightest of light handling marks here and there.

Markings read: BARLING, 5574, LONDON ENGLAND.  Replacement stem is lacking the crossed Barling logo.

Length: 6.03"
Bowl width: 1.34"
Bowl Height: 1.83"
Chamber dimensions: .74" across, 1.61" deep
Weight: 33 grams

8.25 out of 10. First off, one full point removed due to the replacement stem.  The stem itself is as described above, with a small pinprick toothmark on the bottom of the button and a very slight, buffed-over tooth 'wave' on the top of the button.  The nomenclature is fully readable, and for the most part deep, but there are a couple areas where it is slightly buffed and has lost its factory crisp edges.  The rim shows some slight-to-moderate darkening around the chamber opening.  Finally there are a few very light, small handling marks here and there on the pipe, but no real dents or dings to speak of.  That's it.  Otherwise ready to pack and light.
