Product Description

Ardor Marte 2006 Calabash Carved/Ringblast In Gorgeous Condition

Description, Markings, Measurements:

Ardor is run by the Rovera family, now in their fourth generation of pipemakers. Since 1911, the Rovera family has been creating pipes, but it has been in the past 15 years or so that the Rovera brand eschewed mass production in favor of high-quality, unique and distinctive pipes under the Ardor name. Dorelio Rovera personally hand picks only the finest blocks of extra quality briar from all across Italy, and then air-cures those blocks an additional ten years before carving Ardor pipes. The process gives the pipe a flavor that is extremely distinctive and unlike other air-cured pipes. Both the flavor of the wood and the unique beauty of the pipes have created a legion of fans, especially for their larger pipes.

The Marte finish has always been interesting to me, because "officially" it is a smooth finish (according to the US importer, a "grey" finish, that sounds attractive) and yet, I have seen smooth Martes that are "grey" (not really grey but more of an ash brown), reddish brown, orange toned... and that's just the smooths.  There are also sandblasted Martes... or are they rusticated?  Who knows.  It is hard to tell.  Both?  I'm not sure, probably.  If I had to guess... Just a guess here... the Marte stamp is for all the pipes that don't fit into any other category easily so they need to stamp it with something.  That makes it probably one of the most interesting lines to collect because it's literally a grab bag of who-knows-what-you'll-get.  This one - and it's beautiful - is a carved-then-ringblasted half-bent calabash from 2006.  The pipe has clearly been blasted, but it has so many qualities of a carved pipe to me that I have to speculate it's been carved first and then blasted over the top.  The finish is deeply textured, chunky, craggy; it has character and feels great in the hand.  Like all the pieces from this group, it's in fantastic, nearly unsmoked condition.  You'll not find a cleaner example for the money.

Markings read: DR, ARDOR, MARTE, CALABASH, ITALY, FATTA A MANO, 2006. Stem is impressed "Ardor" on the bottom.  Stampings are deep and crisp like the day the pipe came out of the workshop.

Length: 6.81"
Bowl width: 2.11"
Bowl Height: 2.56"
Chamber dimensions: .98" across, 2.36" deep
Weight: 72 grams

9.85 out of 10. Very lightly and lovingly smoked and cared for over the last seven years.  The only issue - and it is minor - is just a whisper, a hint, of darkening around the the chamber opening, scattered here and there in the blast.  That's it.  Complete with sleeve.  Practically new at a fraction of the cost.
