Product Description

Perfect 2008 Shalosky Freeform Pear/Acorn w/Paneled Shank

Description, Markings, Measurements:

In 2007, Premal Chheda at Smoker's Haven brought in a young unknown pipe enthusiast and recent Columbus College of Art and Design grad named Bill Shalosky to restore estate pipes and learn how to make pipes; this arrangement would eventually lead to a partnership of sorts with Bill making his own pipes as well as assisting Premal in the creation of Chheda pipes.  What Bill lacked in pipe experience in the very beginning, he more than made up for in raw artistic talent and enthusiasm, and an interesting partnership was formed.  I say "partnership" because I think - especially in the first couple of years - that the teacher and the student roles switched back and forth as both learned from each other.  This is no knock on either Premal or Bill; rather I think it speaks volumes to their ability to work and learn from each other, grow in their craft and develop both as individuals and as the team that they eventually became.  Sometime around 2012, Bill decided to go off on his own, eventually settling in Nashville where he works at Briarworks International and still continues to create his own unique, one-of-a-kind creations on the side.

This Shalosky is a 2008 freeform acorn/pear and shows some of the exploration that occurs when you first start making pipes and experimenting with shape.  That sounded bad, as I read that back, but I don't mean it to; as a pipe maker, and as someone who trains pipe makers, this is how we find our voice, and how new things are discovered.  It is essential in the process of discovery and defining the look and style of who we become as pipe makers.  It also makes for some fascinating pieces in the early years, some of them really cool and others - at least in my case - that I look back on and cringe.  This particular example, I think Bill would probably look at and realize is a solid pipe with many design clues he has incorporated into future designs and I think he would still be rather proud of it.  It's definitely not like what he is making now, but you could say the same about many of the pieces I made in the first year of my pipe making as well (except, maybe, the Pickaxe, which has been refined but not changed dramatically).  Still, though, I look back on my early pieces - the first 25 or 30 - and cringe.  There is NOTHING to cringe about this pipe.  It's got all the proper elements:  The button and slot are spot on, the finishing work is spot on, the engineering is spot on, the staining is great.  The shape is a freeform acorn/pear, with an asymmetrical shank that terminates in a lovely handcut saddle stem.  Do I think Bill would make a pipe like this today?  No.  But do I think Bill's pipes would look the way they do if he hadn't taken chances on making pipes like this?  Absolutely.  And that's the thing; these pipes, they're essential to the end-game of pipe making.  Creativity, exploration, taking chances, and doing things that may not be the norm are all part of finding out who we are as artisans.  I love this pipe for those reasons, and I'm sure you will too.  Comes complete with the original tamper that Bill included with the pipe, stained in a matching deep red.
